In 1984, Alexey Pajitnov, the creator of Tetris, faced a major obstacle when the Soviet Union's government-owned software company, Elorg, claimed ownership of his game. Pajitnov had created Tetris while working at the Academy of Sciences in Moscow, and the government asserted that all intellectual property created by employees belonged to the state. Undeterred, Pajitnov partnered with Henk Rogers, to distribute Tetris worldwide. After a series of complex negotiations and licensing agreements, Pajitnov's game was finally released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1989. The game's massive success propelled Tetris to become one of the best-selling video games of all time, with over 495 million copies sold worldwide.
