Welcome to Raw Impressions number 21, a birthday episode. Today is April 4th, one day after Dale's birthday. Yeah, and two days before Izzy's birthday. More importantly, the most important thing in the world.
Izzy's birthday. Izzy's birthday. Yeah, it's been a topic of conversation for quite a while now. Can you say it's reaching a fever pitch?
Yes, I can definitely say it's reaching a fever pitch. I'm excited to celebrate it and I'm excited to move on, to be perfectly honest. Is it okay if I divulge that it reduced you to tears yesterday? Well, I guess it is now.
We can always edit it out. You got a moment yesterday driving Izzy to school where the birthday chatter reached such heights that it just kind of wore you down. Yeah, I think I just try to be as even and caring and thoughtful of a parent as I can be. But sometimes I can feel a little claustrophobic when something is repeated a lot and by a lot, you know, it's a lot.
And so yeah, I had a moment on the way to school yesterday where I needed a tiny break from... Is it fair to say that yesterday was not your best birthday? It's fair to say yesterday was not my best birthday. That's true.
I fucked up. I didn't deliver on the birthday dream yesterday. The birthday. Okay, no, it's not a big dream.
Let me just... I want to talk for a second. I want to say something. I'm sorry.
Here are my excuses. Number one. I had just returned from a trip to Durham, North Carolina for a week of intense work. It wasn't that intense.
Come on, Dan. I didn't realize that your birthday was pretty much the day after I got back. I of course could have consulted a calendar and realized that. But I don't know.
Somehow it was just sort of the figment. It was sort of floating in the future and I thought I might have a day or two before your birthday, but I did not. I was unprepared. I don't know if there's really any other excuses I need to number right now.
We can move on. I just wanted to put that out there in a public way. Aw. I don't expect that.
Alright, so yesterday was your birthday. You? Yes. Yep.
I entered Planet Earth April 3, 1977. I was actually just downstairs listening to a playlist on Spotify of all the hits from 1977. It's pretty wild all over the place. 1977 was a good time for pop radio.
Oh, that's awesome. When we had Bell, Louise Atkinson, Adele has been breaking hearts and smelling farts since 1977. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you.

Well, like I said, I guess now 46 is off to a very memorable start I get my own personalized birthday song on a podcast with my husband Well, I was going to say that I was listening to Spotify Oh before you were talking with this beautiful. Oh, it's great. You're talking about you're talking about what was a hit on April 3rd 1977 Yeah, I thought I'd be interested. I'm interested to hear what these are and see if I like them see if these were some of my favorite songs Are not yeah, it's start listening.
I will there was well one. I actually I put into a liked playlist for myself I'd never heard the song before but I liked it. I know it's kind of like a I'll just tell you what it is. Okay.
It's called How Much Love by Leo Sayer oh Oh Well everything that Leo Sayer did was amazing. Well, I've never heard of him before to go Oh, now I can't remember but I have it saved to a list and I made a new playlist for myself called Adele's Grooves And the first song in there is How Much Love by Leo Sayer who's new to me? Oh, I really wish I could just start pumping out some Leo Sayer Connecto it's I can't I just know I just know I'm a solo artist. Yeah, he's got it And he's got a big he's got big curly head of hair.
Uh-huh. He has a big curly actually that at that time period a big curly Head of man hair was like very very I had a friend who had his hair permed in 1977 or so Josh Josh had his hair permed and Around that time there was a there was a major league pitcher named Mark Fidrich pitched for the Detroit Tigers and he had a beautiful Head of curly hair. Nice people loved it. Even my uncle Chuck who was a hardass by the way tough guy I shouldn't say it was a hardass.
He was tough tough big tough. I feel like it was just a manly man right there Curled yeah, it was a trend it was a hot trend men with like a wild perm tear. Yeah. Yeah, I Well, I'm then so that was an interesting song for me.
I'll have to play it for you later and then So some of the other songs which you already know disco groove. No, I would say it was kind of like a songwriter soft rock sail away a little bit Okay, I want to say a couple of things number one year of the cat is a very strange song That's a strange song. What does that mean? Who cares talking about is a person?
Okay, see that's where you and I differ I care because I get really hung up on words I get confused. I'm like, what do you mean the year of the cat? Are we talking about a literal cat? That is possibly the best one of the best song titles ever.
That's because you love cats I don't know the way it sounds. It goes the year of the cat Yeah, I know I just I it sounds and it's so evocative of like who knows what it's a really cool Mood song I would say right it sets a mood it's transported me when I was a kid I don't know where it's to the year of the cat Yeah, it's just an odd song though. You're the cat cuz I'm not true. Yeah, it's just odd and then um so after that a song came on that Well, it made me laugh because it's a band that you and I have I wouldn't say we've like sparred but well, we've you know a little bit had some differing of opinion about this band and um I Listen to the lyrics maybe in a way that I never had really like heard them before It was walk this way arow Smith.
Oh Oh, right that is a really Dirty song oh yeah Dangerous rock exciting. Oh, it felt yeah, I was like whoa. It's like risque rock Oh, they are like they are bad ass and they played it the wide on the street when they were when they first formed the YMCA Greenfield they are a massachusetts band. Oh, right.
I always forget that can you imagine that they were so good I heard sweet emotion the other day and I almost lost my mind. Mm-hmm. That's a great song and it's edgy Aerosmith are edgy and they pretty much kick ass What do you feel do you now do you now believe and this is this is what she said folks? Well this to go back to why we were sparring is a check this out This is one of the most audacious things that I've ever said this blew my mind This is like beyond the you know not caring for the Beatles this goes way beyond that This is so much more controversial to me everyone listen and don't tell me once that walk this way or love in an elevator Is just as good as the entire aero Smith back catalog.

Mm-hmm. I heard that uh The singer heart but there's Nancy and and okay is that it? I don't know Um quickly they did a they did a Led Zeppelin cover that reduced Robert Plantateers. Oh Wow, okay.
Okay. Give a little bit super tramp. Oh, that's a great song It's a great song. You know who did a really good cover of that and I this is kind of a guilty favorite.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah Googoodolls They did a pretty good cover of that song, but that is a really good song. That's that's your little I mean We should really do a googoodles episode because loo episode well, I mean I mean music Monday where you cover iris You have that song that you love you're like oh my god.
That song by the googoodles makes me cry It's called iris right. It's not even in oh, you know what it is called iris. That's right. Yeah, it's song really you love that song I kind of do yeah.
Yeah, give a little bit the original recording of it. It's fantastic big big strummed acoustic guitars Such a wonderful melody. Okay. You made me believe in magic the Bay City rollers Do you know that?

You don't say yeah, because it really it really rides the line rods do it in the late 70s Really he he's riding all sorts of lines Yeah, he did he did a few kind of really I don't Like that song I wouldn't say it was cringe worthy until I saw the video Because I mean there's hot legs from that time period. Mm-hmm.
Do you think I'm sexy? You know, it looks like my guy leo sayer has three songs on the billboard top 100 in 1977 Please um when I need you oh god. That song's great. Yeah, and I need you I hold out my hand and I touch you I don't remember.

That's a great song That's a nice doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo It's kind of a cheesy like you know like Old guy tries disco because a lot of that was happening a lot disco took everybody over I guess I like old guy tries to disco it took over it hit and it's like and then broad steward made his disco song the rolling stones made They're pretty fantastic.
This goes on they did a good job Look at this is old guy. They were old. They were old. They were a 60s band.
Yeah, they went disco to great effect They sure did. Mm-hmm. Good stuff Frankie Valley. He went disco You ready?

Can't remember it. All of it. Andy was the younger brother of the Bee Gees. He was the younger Gibb.
That's kind of a tragic story. Didn't they have curly hair? Oh, they did. Yeah.
But Andy was very attractive and younger than them. And he was featured on a lot of television programs. He was the guest star. And he came to a tragic end.
Oh, what happened? I believe he OD'd. I believe he died in some sort of substance related incident. That's sad.
