A Book Club Forms From My Ear Ringing

from Historiography! · host Jim Stewart Allen

I'm all over the place this week =) I start by talking about boxing and how I get into it and my area of expertise (1987-2009) Cinco De Mayo is coming up! And we should celebrate something else if we don't connect with Cinco De Mayo's history. If you don't (I'm looking at you most of America) stop wearing sombreros and start celebrating the date in which the confederate government disbanded (May 5th!!!!!!) And also totally watch this 2007 HBO Pay Per View boxing match where Floyd Mayweather walks in with a sombrero on Cinco De Mayo. What the fuck right?! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KhBzF6UX_0 So I have this weird ringing in my ear and it started a book club! I'm gonna make the book club episode in 2 weeks (I know I said one but we should all have a bit more time to reflect) It's called, "The Cay" and was written for kids, by an American in 1969 talking about a white kid and a black man trapped on an island in I believe 1911 or so. A historical goldmine basically! Buy it on Amazon or just go to a library, do it! You have 2 weeks and then we discuss! http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/044022912X/ref=sr_1_1_twi_mas_1_olp?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1461541545&sr=1-1&keywords=the+cay There will be a discussion post on my Facebook page as well! Don't read it if you don't want spoilers I would guess is the protocol on this!

Regina Jonas: the first female rabbi - for iPod/iPhone The Open University Regina Jonas (1902-1944), who is now widely recognised as the world’s first female rabbi, was ordained in Nazi Germany in 1935. However, for many years after her death at Auschwitz, she remained a largely forgotten figure until the discovery of her papers in the early 1990s. This collection explores Jonas’ story, which raises important issues in relation to the role of women in historiography and the connection between processes of remembering, forgetting and identity formation. Stefanie Sinclair, Open University Lecturer in Religious Studies, travels to Berlin to find out more about Jonas’ life and legacy within the Jewish community and speaks to British rabbis Sybil Sheridan and Elli Tikvah Sarah about why Jonas was almost forgotten and what she means to them and to other rabbis in Britain today. This material is taken from the Open University course: A332 Why is religion controversial? Historiography by Jeff and Laurel Jefferson A talk about historiography importance
