A Century of Keeping Montanans on the Road

In honor of the Montana Department of Transportation's 100th anniversary, MDT historian Jon Axline examines the evolution of transportation in the Treasure State. Unless they were traveling by rail, one hundred years ago Montanans relied on horses and wagons pulled over rough trails to get them where they wanted to go. The development of good roads and reliable bridges represented a significant part of the economic and social development of Montana during the twentieth century and MDT was the spearhead for getting the job done.
