A coal miner’s daughter tells the story of a hard hit people

from WORT 89.9FM Madison · host WORT 89.9FM Madison

“There’s a big misconception that poor white people are Trump’s base.” That’s a quote from the new book by Beth Howard, “Song For a Hard-Hit People: A Memoir of Antiracist Solidarity From a Coal Miner's Daughter.” She says of the book: “In the midst of divisive rhetoric, violent repression, and grifters writing elegies, may this story be a song.” The book busts stereotypes as it tells the story of “what we all have to gain when white people join in solidarity with Black and Brown people to win a world where we all have what we need: nourishing food on the table, a roof over everyone’s heads, and a dignified life.” Howard is a Cultural Strategist for Showing Up for Racial Justice and the creator of the viral narrative campaign Rednecks for Black Lives. Her Turn reporter Arlene Zaucha talks with her about her work and her life growing up in rural Kentucky. Image courtesy of Beth Howard
