A Conversation with Amanda Davey: Geographer, Writer, Publisher
from The Online Entrepreneur Academy Podcast
Amanda Davey is a geographer and landscape architect who writes entertaining (even quirky) non-fiction and takes photographs also inspired by her love of the outside world and its foibles. She has worked for herself since 2004 and started publishing greeting cards in 2014 and added books to the list in 2015 with her grandfather's long-awaited autobiography of his life as a high-profile civil engineer. Once a map curator, the call to spend more time with muddy feet was strong and she retrained as a landscape architect in the 1990s. Her interests are extremely diverse and eclectic and landscape architecture is the perfect foil for this as there is virtually no subject that is off-limits.She has worked as an environmental consultant, graphic designer, photographer, information specialist and has a design background underpinned by mathematics. A deep believer in the value to learning and life purpose that humour and laughter can contribute she is a fan of Douglas Adams as an instinctive philosopher and not just a comedy writer and is keen that learning happens through enjoyment and curiosity - that 'lighting the flame' idea for education rather than just plodding out information with no heart. The publishing business is Tilia Publishing UK https://www.tiliapublishinguk.co.uk. Tilia is the scientific name for lime trees, the name was chosen partly for the outdoors element to it, but also after a childhood favourite tree that grew tall and proud outside her bedroom window. She has written or co-written four books and illustrated two more:2013 Scilly Birding: Joining the Madding Crowd, Brambleby Books. Simon Davey (illus AD)2015 It's Warmer Down Below: the autobiography of Sir Harold Harding, 1900-1986, Tilia Publishing UK. Amanda Davey with Simon Davey (in prep)Cristina and the Painter: a Medici Princess's story, Tilia Publishing UK. Amanda Davey (in prep)A Force for Nature: A biographical memoir of Dr Francis Rose, Tilia Publishing UK. Simon Davey (in prep)As a huge fan of the positive role that social media has the ability to play, Amanda and Simon Davey ran the Facebook and Twitter accounts for the British Lichen Society from 2017-2021. Natural history knowledge growth through social media thanks to smartphones and increasing access to knowledgeable specialists has the chance to help give a push up to that lit flame idea of learning and development. With this is mind they also have a Facebook group called Our World in the Lime Light, which celebrates and enjoys the quirky and beautiful things that can be seen in the big outdoors in particular. Not solely the natural world, either.Do message us, suggestions, feedback guests you'd like to have in a conversation here? Thank you for you support and interest.
