He is the author of several notable biographies, including those of Frank Capra, John Ford, and Steven Spielberg, as well as critical studies of directors such as Ernst Lubitsch, Billy Wilder, and the Coen Brothers. McBride has written extensively on Orson Welles, publishing three books on the legendary filmmaker. In addition to his writing, he acted in Welles' The Other Side of the Wind and has won a Writers Guild of America award.
