Murphy was the first African American woman to be appointed to a judgeship in the state of Texas – she later became the presiding Judge of the Austin, TX Municipal court. Prior to joining the municipal court, for eight years - she practiced law part time and for five years she was head of the government department of Huston-Tillotson College – now Huston-Tillotson University.
