A Cure For The Self

from Navigate The Day · host Navigate The Day

This week I reflect on Seneca's idea that philosophy should be a cure for the self rather than just something interesting to study. That sounds inspiring on paper, but I have to admit I'm still wrestling with what that actually looks like in my own life. If philosophy is medicine, then healing isn't always comfortable, and I'm beginning to realize that growth often feels more painful than I expected. Throughout this episode, I question what it really means to live virtuously when I still rely on masks to get through work, struggle to find confidence within myself, and continue arguing with many of Stoicism's core teachings. I explore why I have such a difficult time recognizing my own privileges, why confidence built on character feels so much harder to believe than confidence built on external achievements, and why purpose remains something I continue searching for rather than something I've found. I also open up about feeling trapped between the life I wish I had and the reality I wake up to each day. Instead of confidently embracing hardship, I often distract myself from it, avoiding difficult thoughts through hobbies, entertainment, and routine. My journaling reveals just how often I resist reality instead of responding to it, and how easy it is for fear, regret, and disappointment to keep me standing still. Even so, this week's reflections remind me that healing isn't measured by never struggling. Perhaps it's measured by continuing to return to the practice, even when I don't feel like it's working. Maybe philosophy isn't meant to erase my doubts overnight, but to slowly reshape the way I meet them. I don't finish this week feeling invincible or overflowing with confidence, but I do leave with a deeper appreciation that real growth rarely feels dramatic. Sometimes it simply looks like showing up again tomorrow, asking difficult questions, and refusing to completely give up on becoming a little better than I was yesterday.
