A dragon a necromancer and a box

I come across necromancer and his bandit crew interrogating a dying dragon. I drive off the necromancer and the dying dragon gives me a quest to retrieve an ancient box and deliver it to someone. I get the box. Then the necromancer wants the box too. I don't know enough about either of these to make the choice. But I feel I made the wrong choice here.
