A free, online workshop aims to educate Alaskans about livable communities

from North American Network

How can Alaska make its communities more livable—especially for its older residents? Next week, “A-A-R-P Alaska” will co-host a three-day, online workshop about the issue, with Gil Penalosa—the executive-director of the Canadian-based nonprofit, “Eight/80 Cities”. Katie Severin is with “A-A-R-P Alaska”… “‘Eight/80 Cities’ derives its name from the idea that we should strive for communities that are great for both an eight-year-old and an 80-year-old. Such communities provide safe and enjoyable infrastructure for—among other things—sustainable mobility, parks, streets, and public spaces. Being an older adult represents a full one-third of our life. And, during this last third, less than 15-percent of people are very dependent on others for their basic activities—meaning that the other 85-percent are relatively independent. As part of this workshop with ‘Eight/80 Cities’’ Gil Penalosa, we’ll focus on what we can do together—to make sure that those who are in the final third of their life can be healthier and happier.” The online workshop is free—and runs from Tuesday, the 26th, through Thursday, the 28th.
