A Fun Surprise in Holbrook, Arizona

from The ROAMies Podcast · host The ROAMies

Sometimes the best travel moments are the ones you don’t see coming! In this episode, we share a delightful surprise we discovered in Holbrook, Arizona, a hidden gem that proves adventure can be found anywhere. Tune in to get inspired to slow down, explore off the beaten path, and find joy in unexpected places.  We stopped at the Tourist Office in Holbrook, AZ, for a pit stop and found much more: The Navajo County Historical Society Museum. It's an official Arizona information center. The museum houses the original sheriff's office that served Navajo County beginning in 1989. The adjacent jail was in use until 1976. The rest of the courthouse was built around the cells. Exhibits include a post office, communications equipment, early kitchen items, a late 1800 pump organ, general merchandise, The Route 66 Auditorium, a school room, antique office equipment, law libraries, the Navajo County Sheriff's Hashknife Posse's annual Pony Express Ride memorabilia, military memorabilia, the old court reporter's library, and the Judges' Chamber, a display of the story of the Blevins Shootout when Sheriff Commodore Perry Owens tried to serve and arrest warrant for Andy Cooper, including a model of the Blevins Home where the shootout took place. There are also the WPS and CCC programs of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal (which were completed in the neighboring Petrified Forest National Park and in Holbrook), and much more.  "The Navajo County Courthouse served citizens for seventy-eight years, dispensing justice, collecting tax levies, recording public records, and issuing marriage licenses."
