A Generational Calling Upon The Lord- (Genesis 4:25-26)

from Adventure in the Ascent · host Eric Lovin

“The condition of the church may be very accurately gauged by its prayer meetings. So is the prayer meeting a grace-ometer, and from it we may judge of the amount of divine working among a people. If God be near a church, it must pray. And if He be not there, one of the first tokens of His absence will be slothfulness in prayer.” -SpurgeonDo you hunger for God’s breakthrough presence in your lives?↠Calling upon Him goes all the way back to the beginning. There was a people that determined to seek Him (Vs. 25-26)↠These verses follow two chapters of the story of sin’s effects↠At the end, there is a glimmer of hope↠Two lines- Cain & Seth, one path of wickedness, one path of seeking↠One line goes independent of God, the other determines to call out to Him↠It begins with Enosh, a collective relationship with God begins as a group determines to cry out and to seek Him↠This is the beginning of a pattern through Scripture- cry out to Him and there is grace, hope, mercy, reconciliation, and healing to be found (Ps. 27)↠When we do not, though, the opposite is true↠We are to be a people who continually call upon the name of the Lord. We are, by design, to be dependent on HIm, and when we operate outside of intended design, things fall apart.↠This family line continued to call upon the Lord…↠Enoch- “he pleased God;” Noah- “who found favor;” Abraham- “a friend of God;” David- “a heart after God↠David is the only one in Scripture to use “racham” to describe His love for God, usually reserved to describe God’s love for us which describes a love that draws one in and hugs them↠Taking on His characteristics (Gal. 5:16-25)↠This line was not perfect, but in a fall, learned to cry out to God- “create in me a clean heart, oh, God…” instead of continue in their fall↠Through a remnant that called out to Him, He weaved a future hope. This family line brings us right to Jesus, His lineage. ↠Your ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to Him, not just in salvation, but in the everyday calling upon Him, affects not only you individually but the generations after you (Ps. 78:1-4, 17:4↠One yes leads to another yes while a no leads to another no↠Will you be known as one who calls on the name of the Lord?↠Or will it be said of you as in Isaiah 65:1- “I was ready to respond, but no one asked for help. I was ready to be found, but no one was looking for me”↠Even if no one before you sought, like with Enosh’s line, you can begin!↠True revival begins with crying out to God, it will begin that way here as well. RESPOND THIS WEEK: Pray and seek the Lord in new ways, pray over the renewal services next week, make plans to attend each night, help spread the word…Comment here
