When students disciples themselves to a rabbi they did so in the hopes that they could one day become like him. The request to be a disciple was similar to asking, “Do you think I could be like you?” If the rabbi said “yes,” you could follow. If he said “no,” you’d go do other menial work, like fishing, masonry, collecting taxes, etc. That Jesus finds these boys and says, “Follow me,” indicates to them that he thinks they can be like him.
