A God-shaped hole
from Daily Picture · host Stephanie Hawkins
Today I moved a plant from the direct sunlight of my kitchen, as I am going away for 3 days. It feels like I have a big gap there now. This has brought to mind the "God shaped hole" that is often described as in humans and can only be filled by our creator God. If we try to fill it by sleeping, drinking, eating excessively or through substance abuse etc, the gap remains. Theologian and Philosopher, Augustine, in the 4th century, is to have said to God, "You have made us for yourself and our heart is restless until it rests in you". Apostle Paul wrote, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit" (Romans 15:13). I often imagine a bucket of need which I sense God filling up whether it is just needing a small top up or a major amount of provision. Rather than concentrating on what we need, let us concentrate on thanking God for His provision, sometimes in the most wondrous ways. King David declared of God, "For He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things" (Psalm 107:9). Not only does God provide practically but towards all our needs. For instance, "The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit"(Psalm 34:18). Expect God to fill your bucket of need and to fill that God-shaped hole within you. "See, I am doing a new thing! ..."(Isaiah 43:19).
