A “Godfrey Daniel” Edition of RRR # 1,252 July 14, 2024

from Rapidly Rotating Records · host Glenn Robison

W. C. Fields Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s. I’m willing to bet that almost everyone knows who this fellow is. This is a 1926 studio publicity still for the picture “So’s Your Old Man” in which Fields plays Samuel Bisbee, an inventor. So why a photo of Fields for this week’s playlist? I don’t think he said it in “So’s Your Old Man,” but Fields is famous for the phrase “Godfrey Daniel,” which is as close as he could come to saying “goddammit” without having the censors cut it from the film. Such words and phrases are sometimes called “by-words” and in the fourth segment of this week’s word you’ll hear one of them. We’ll also have not one, not two, not three but FOUR birthday segments for Ted Kohler, Noble Sissle, Johnny Marvin and Jimmy McHugh. There’s lots of great music and interesting information so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era. Just click the link above to listen streaming online and/or download for listening at your convenience. THANKS FOR LISTENING! ENJOY THE SHOW!
