A Good Christian Father Isn’t Enough
from Everyday Reformation · host EveryDayReformation
What does faithful Christian fatherhood actually look like in the ordinary grind of family life? In this episode of Everyday Reformation, Brandon Scroggins and Nick Carter sit down with Dylan Heartsill to hear the story of how God began reshaping his understanding of marriage, fatherhood, family worship, church life, and biblical responsibility. Dylan grew up in church, attended Christian school, knew the Bible, and by most outward standards was already a committed Christian husband and father. But as he began examining Scripture more carefully, reading men such as Voddie Baucham and Scott Brown, and learning from faithful men around him, he became convinced that there was a difference between simply being a good Christian man and deliberately taking responsibility for the spiritual culture of his household. That conviction led to repentance, practical changes in parenting, the establishment of regular family worship, a deeper investment in his wife and children, and eventually a move toward a church community where other families were pursuing many of the same convictions. This is not the story of a celebrity Christian or an extraordinary platform. It is the story of ordinary faithfulness: a husband learning to lead, a wife faithfully helping her husband, young children being trained in worship, and a household slowly being shaped by the Word of God. The conversation also explores the difficulty of family worship with young children, biblical discipline, homeschooling, the importance of older and more mature men, choosing a local church, and why consistent obedience often produces fruit that is difficult to see from day to day. Because as the father goes, so goes the family. As the family goes, so goes the church. And from faithful homes, the effects can reach far beyond the front porch. Everyday Reformation exists to apply the truths of God’s Word to all of God’s world—from the family and the church to the public square—under the lordship of Jesus Christ.
