Welcome to the podcast where we take a light-hearted look at the dark side of history. And the title of our podcast today is A Haunting at Fox Hollow Farm. It is October, Randy. It is.

It's the month of Halloween, and so we're going to have some kind of creepy stories for you. But this one is especially creepy. It is about a haunted farm, but it also includes a serial killer. So you get two for the price of one.

True crime and a ghost story. Excellent. That's too far. You live for this.

I do. I do. I do. That's too far.

Yeah, it's about the I-70 killer, a guy by the name of Herbert Baumeister. That's a fuck-up name. Baumeister? Baumeister?

Baumeister? Something like that. He was a serial killer. He was known as the I-70 killer because he killed people along the I-70 corridor.

Are you sure it wasn't 42 or anything like that? That would have thrown off the police head. As many as at least 20. And then some strange stuff started happening on this farm.

So we're going to talk about Herbert's life, his dastardly deeds, and also the haunting that's been occurring over there in Indiana. But before we do, let me remind everyone that we are a comedy podcast. We use adult language, so if that offends you, please check out the podcast, one of the other fine podcasts out there, including our friends at They Walk Among Us, our friends at Kiwi Crimes, our friends at Insight. So please check those out.

If you're into the paranormal, you might want to check out Haunted Visions, which is a podcast that Brandy and our friend Rachel host. And then, of course, Chuck and I host a podcast called Dead Ball about baseball players whose lives ended prematurely. So a lot of options out there if you're offended by adult language. If you're not offended by adult language, if you crave adult language, then you're in the right place.

Yeah. We have plenty of adult language. We do. Yes.

Let me introduce my co-host, a lady who really needs no introduction, but a lady who is known throughout the land as Brandy the Benevolent, Her Majesty, Queen Brandy the First. How are you, Brandy? I'm doing all right, Timmy. How are you?

I'm fine. Are you glad it's Halloween season? I am glad it's Halloween. This is Halloween month.

Noah's very excited. Have you had anything pumpkin spice yet? I don't prefer pumpkin spice. I have had pumpkin pie this past weekend.

Did you? Yes. I'm all about pumpkin pie. Yeah, it's good.

It is. Yeah, it is. But I'm not into pumpkin spice. All right.

Well, there's pumpkin spice. She's one of the spice girls. She was the fat one that kind of stayed off camera. Okay.

Are you looking forward to DweebCon? I am looking forward to DweebCon. It'll be exciting. Yes.

Next week, as we record this, next week is DweebCon. It's October the 12th or 14th. Is that right? 13th, 14th, 15th.

Yeah. 13th, 14th, 15th. And here in Cincinnati, you can get details of DweebCon by visiting our Facebook group, History DweebCon, the podcast. We have all the information there you need.

My brothers are coming. Both of them. Yes, your brothers, your sister-in-laws. The colonel will be back.

The colonel is recovering. He's in an opiate-inused haze right now. He's living on the Percocets. But he's doing cool.

I doubt it. He's probably stopped taking them by now. He said he's running out. So, yeah, I think he's on Advil now.

Which, you know, he might as well be on M&M's. But he said he's doing better. So, we're hoping to have the colonel back next week. He needs to suck it up already.

He's going to milk it for all its worth. All right. Let's talk about, Brandy, a haunting at Fox Hollow Farm. Shall we?

You shall. You shall. Thank you. Yes.

Is this Talk Back Bobby Kennedy Day? It could be. I thought it was Thursdays, but this is only Tuesday. But we can have Talk Back Bobby Kennedy Tuesday.

Okay. Yes. Let us begin. Perfect.

Fox Hollow Farm, Brandy. There's a farm. No shit. Get the fuck out of town on that.

There's an 18-acre estate, actually, in Carmel, Indiana. I think it happens in Indiana. It's right across the border from Ohio, of course. Our neighboring state here in the Midwest of the United States.

For our listeners. Is it Carmel? Is it right across there? I don't know where it is.

It's by Indianapolis, I think. Indianapolis is an hour and a half from here. Yeah. Okay.

It was the home of alleged serial killer. Well, we say alleged because he killed himself before he was convicted. So we have to say alleged in the event that he comes back and sees us. In the event that he's listening?

Yes. Okay. Home of the alleged serial killer, Herb Baumeister. I think I'm pronouncing it.

Baumeister. Baumeister. Whatever. Okay.

Sherman. It is. Herb. Herb.

I don't think of Herb Tarly from the UK. Always. Every time. Yes.

His belts always matched his shoes. Well, and they were white. And they were white. That's right.

He had some sweet suits. He did. I'm going to stress if I can. You absolutely should.

Yeah. I'm trying to get all the kind of tail then. Crazy tail. Many of Herb's 20 victims, he killed 20 people.

That we know of, right? Yeah. Actually, speculated he killed many more. But many of his 20 victims, at least 20 victims he murdered, the remains were on the farm.

Thus, the genesis of the hauntings that we're going to talk about later. Perfect. Since the murders, many strange incidents, Randy, have occurred on this property. You are giving it all away.

No, no, no. You're going to get into all the details later. Today, Fox Hollow Farm is considered one of the most haunted farms in America. I didn't know there was a list of haunted farms.

But yeah, there is. All right. They have dead cows. Do you hear moving?

No, but people die. Crazy shit happens on farms. People get killed. The in-cold-blood people, they were killed on a farm.

They were massacred on that farm. Yeah, that's true. So, you know, when that shit happens, there's some hauntings. There's body farms.

And there's body farms. Are there a count as haunted farms? Well, this is basically what Fox Hollow Farm was. A body farm after Herb Meister.

Yeah, but it's Herb Meister. Herb Meister. Herb Meister. But it's not a sanctioned body farm.

No, no, no. It's more of a. It's more of an informal body farm. Sure.

Yeah. All right. You'll have that. So, let's talk about the I-70 killer, shall we?

We shall. Herbert Richard Bob Meister. Herb Meister. Yeah.

You know, I always wondered. Because, you know, Richard is short for Dick. I never understood why. Or Dick is short for Richard.

I never understood that. Like, why is that? I don't care. Well, here's why I care.

Your name is not Richard. But then here's why I care. Why? Because remember this in the 1970s, there was a comedian impressionist named Rich Little.

So, really, he's Little Dick, if you think about it. Dick Little. Yeah, but if you look at it where. He's like in Spanish, where the verb or the adjective becomes.

But it's not in Spanish. Yeah, but in Spanish, he would have a little dick. Well, he's not in Spanish. But if he travels outside the United States, he's got a little dick.

I think he's dead now. Is he really? Write it down. Check it out.

All right, I'll check it out. All right, let me tell our audience about Richard, Herbert Richard Bob Meister. He was an alleged serial killer from Westfield, Indiana, near Indianapolis. Of course, where we were at CrimeCon, Brandy.

We'll be, of course, at Nashville CrimeCon in May. Success. So, we invite all of our listeners to join us in May at CrimeCon. Bob Meister committed suicide before he could be brought to trial for his nasterly deeds.

And he never confessed to the crimes of which have been alleged, Brandy. No, no. But, you know, he's still alive. He is still alive.

Yeah, I thought he was. Good Lord. Yeah. He is 78.

Yeah. I bet he can still do a pretty bad W.C. Fields or John Wayne. Oh, yeah.

George Burns. I love George Burns. I wish he was still alive. He is not.

He got a lot of tail. Yeah. All right. So, as I said, it's believed he's responsible officially between 11 and 20 murders during his spree.

Now, here's a little unknown fact. Brandy was known, but it's a little unknown fact about her Bob Meister. Tell me. He was the founder of the store chain Save-A-Lots.

You've seen Save-A-Lots before, have you? I have. He founded that. Oh, yeah.

Yeah, so he made a lot of money off of that. Huh. Anyway, Herbert Richard, we'll call him Herb. See, how did I get, see, I'm getting confused.

Okay, here's why English is fucked up. Hit me. His name is Herb, A-T-R-B, right? But it's also Herb.

Yes. So, you see my concern? It's spelled the same, but pronounced differently. The English language is a tricky thing.

You're telling me. I know, right? Herbert Richard, or Herb, Herb, Bob Meister, was born on April 27th, Brandy, 1947. So, if he was born April 27th, his mom probably pregnant during holidays.

Probably. A little far along, actually, right? Okay. Had a baby bump, by then, wouldn't she?

I would think so. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was the oldest of four children, born to Dr. Herbert and Elizabeth Bob Meister.

So, his dad was a doctor. Yes. So, it's a very successful family. Prominent physician.

Yes. They're in Indiana. Oh, my next sentence says that. His father was a prominent physician and was well-liked in the community.

Okay. All well, so far? All well, so far. All well, right.

Now, as I said, Herb was the oldest of four children, and by all accounts, he had a normal childhood. By the onset of adolescence, however, that's what all goes to hell, isn't it? It always is. He began exhibiting antisocial behaviors, Brandy.

Acquaintances later recall the young Bob Meister playing with dead animals and urinating on the teacher's desk. That should have been a clue. Yeah, but what I couldn't understand is, was this something he was doing simultaneously, or were these, you know, separate events? It would be bad enough.

It's bad enough to play with dead animals, and it's bad enough to just pee on your teacher's desk, but if you're doing it at the same time, well, that's tricky. There's some red flags. Well, I think separately there's red flags. You think?

You know, I can't speak for everyone, but I think so. His childhood friends remember that Herb used to ponder what it would be like to, quote, taste human urine. Nope. Seems to me, you could test that out pretty well.

Really, you could. You could just stick your dick in a cup and piss and drink it. I mean, my God. You don't have to make a big thing about it.

Fucking whiz. Sounds like it was more of a philosophical question than he was posing. Well, that's a stupid philosophical question. Well, have you never wondered what human urine is?

Nope. No, and you know what? If I did wonder, A, I wouldn't tell anybody. B, there's a way to test that out.

Like, piss in a cup, for God's sake. I wonder if everyone's pee tastes different. I'm sure it does. Well, it would have to, because some of it depends on what you eat, because it smells different.

So I would think it would taste different. I would too. Because golden crisp makes my pee smell weird. And evidently, asparagus does the same thing.

Oh, yeah, asparagus. But the golden crisp thing is a real problem. Asparagus, they say you can taste. I don't know if you can taste it or not, but I know you can smell it.

It tastes like a semen, too. Yes. Well, yeah, but. He ain't gonna ponder that, as far as we know.

No, he's just wanting to drink pee. But later on, it becomes clear that he was a big fan of the semen, but we'll get into that later. Nothing wrong with that. If you're a semen lover, we love you just a second.

Nothing wrong with being a semen lover. It's just not my particular taste, Brandy, but, you know, teaches them, right? Yes. Now, human urine is a different story, but, you know, I'm not gonna judge anyone on that either, but just don't ponder it out loud.

Right? Okay. Yeah, keep that shit internalized. Push it down.

Push it down. Don't be going out there and putting it out all on Front Street. Not on Front Street. When he was 12 years old, Brandy, little Herbie, found a dead crow in the road.

Dude, I saw a crow the other day that was the size of a fucking dog. That thing scared the shit out of me. I kept calling it Edgar Allan Crowe. My girlfriend was cracking up because I'm like, I can't.

It was on Noah's. I was supposed to go, Noah takes yoga. Yeah. Why does your five-year-old take yoga?

He wants to find his zen. And I support that. But it's not hot yoga. It's not hot.

No, it's not hot yoga. He's six. I'm sorry. He is six.

Do they have, like, so it's not yoga for kids or is he in the adult class? Because that would be really good. No, he's not in the adult class. It's yoga for kids.

Okay. But, you know, I go to go pick him up from school. That's a bullshit right there. I'm just saying, that's a bullshit.

Kids are flexible enough. You don't need to be able to. No, he doesn't have to put his ankle around his neck. He was like a stick.

He's not that flexible. But he needs to find some zen. All right. But he, there was this fucking crow that came over and, like, perched on top, right above the door I was supposed to go in.

And I'm like, well, no, it's fucked. I hope he comes out here. It's not a bad sign. I mean, it's walking and carrying on.

I wonder, is it? What's the difference between a crow and a raven? Probably there are two different birds. They're two different birds.

But they look the goddamn same. They're both black. Yes. Yeah.

I guess, are they only black? Are crows only black? I don't know. I've only ever seen black crows.

Black crows. Would love to see them in concept that they broke up. Black crows? Yeah.

Yeah. But this thing was fucking, I'm telling you, it was the size of a goddamn carrier. Sure. Goddamn huge.

Could have been the mothman. I don't fucking know. All I knew is I wasn't going in there because the thing would have fucking pecked my eyes out. Yeah.

I love the birds. They should remake that movie. Have they made that movie? I don't know.

I don't know. That's a nightmare. I would not go see that. All right.

So anyway, he finds his crow in the middle of the road. Dead crow, of course. Put it in his pocket. Sure.

He put it on his fucking pocket. How big is the goddamn pocket? He then placed the dead crow on the teacher's teacher's desk. I was surprised.

He's like a labrador bringing his master. If you had to choose between a dead crow or this kid pissing on your desk, he's obviously looking for some attention. You think? Way to go, Freud.

Way to decipher that. Pull that one out. Thank you. Jesus.

Anyway, so in 1961, the year of my birth, when Herb was 14 years old. Why are you calling him Herb? Because that's how it's spelled. It's Herb.

When Herb was 14 years old, he started attending high school at North Central High. Were they ready for that? NCHS. Yes.

Were they Bobcats? I don't know what they're making. Well, shit. I should do a little bit more research, I guess.

We'll make them the Bobcats. He was an excellent student, Brandy. Mm-hmm. And was active in biology.

I bet. Did y'all pick up dead crows off the road? They put him in charge of finding the frogs. Biology?

Did you have to dissect a frog? Yeah, it was gross. I wanted to dissect a human, but they said that. They frowned on that.

Bastards. They impeded your learning. They really did. I could have been much more advanced than I am there.

You could have been. You have to admit I could be much more advanced intellectually than I am. I have to admit that that's a true statement. Thank you.

But now, because I dissected a frog, I could have taken out Chuck's gallbladder. Yes. That he was a big baby about it. Yeah, I know.

He wanted like a sterile environment and all that. Whatever. I got Clorox wipes. He was active in the biology, geology, and government classes.

He's like, you know, the little clubs. I know the clubs. Yeah. For the nerds.

And international relations. Now, what the fuck in high school are you going to be, what kind of club are you going to be in for international relations? Oh, don't they have that, what's this called? There's a club for that.

No, there's a club, and I can't think of what it's called. If you ever see his picture, he should be in a hair club for men. That's why he should have been in part of. Was he bald?

In high school? In high school? No, no, not in high school. His father became concerned when he came home from work early one day, school early one day.

I found a herb having sex with lunch meat, some lunch meat. That's disturbing. Why are you laughing? I mean – Piece of bologna just can't go around unmolested in that house.

Yeah, probably teasing. It was probably asking for it. I wonder if he put on condiments. Like, did he put, like, mustard, mayonnaise?

Mayonnaise. You know that's mayonnaise. Was that lube? Yeah, it's lubricant, yeah.

I think you – you know what he should have got? It was head cheese. Was it Vassalia? Head cheese.

Axe. Remember the Vassalia axe murders where they think that they have a big slab of meat in the freezer? They think that they were going to have sexual relationships with meat. Yeah, but what – I mean, you think – I don't know.

I'm thinking provolone if he had cheese on it, but – Why provolone? Head cheese. I'm telling you that head cheese would be the way to go. It's in the name.

Yeah, you got a point there. See? Oscar Mayer has a first name. Concerned – Really?

That's a doctor. So he's on top of this shit. Concerned, Herb's father secretly took him for some psychological testing, and the record showed that Herb at this time was diagnosed with schizophrenia and possibly more than one personality. And being a cheese fucker.

Isn't that kind of young? Did he tell you that at 14? I don't know. They may have found now, but back then, I don't know.

I thought it usually was early 20s when he could – Sometimes. Yeah, maybe. Okay. Herb was not part of the in-crowd, Brandy.

Get the fuck out of town. Fucking ham sandwiches. Fucking ham sandwiches. You fuck one ham sandwich.

Label for life. Label for life. He was usually alone and never dated. He was often – He didn't need to date.

All he needed to do was go to the deli counter. He was often – He was often teased by the other children for being odd and a bit of a nerd. Well, you think that's pretty accurate. Sometimes it's not bullying if it's true.

I guess. 1965. They'll regret that shit. Yeah, they do.

In 1965, when Herb was 18, he graduated from high school, Brandy, and was accepted into Indiana University. Our friends over in Bloomington, Indiana. I.U. Go, I.U.

Go. Hoosiers. Yes. You know they have names.

So now he's a Hoosier. He's a Hoosier. It was at IU, Brandy, that he met the young Juliana Sater. Sater, yeah.

They were drawn to each other, Brandy, due to their strong conservative views. I don't know what to do with that. Apparently, he was a little concerned with religion, our friend Herb. Where in the Bible does it say that?

Fox and corn beef. Where does it say that exactly? Well, you know, it's probably one of those things where he felt – he did that, and he felt guilty, and he prayed. And said some Hail Marys and moved on.

Yeah. Did they both have a love of lunch meat? I, you know, I – I can't really get past that part right now. They started dating.

I'm sorry. When he was 14, he said, like, when you're 14, you have a heart on, like, 15 times a day. I don't care. Yeah, you fuck anything.

You fuck the sofa. Whatever. Yeah. Yeah, you do when you're, like, that age.

So I don't really – I get that. I don't really – I'm not really concerned with him fucking the sandwiches as much as I am his later endeavors. I'm concerned with all of it. I have concerns.

You can't even go on a picnic with this motherfucker. Oh. So I always carry those Ziploc bags. I thought the mayonnaise tasted funny.

Anyway, they began dating. Mm-hmm. And in 1971, Brandy, the two were married. But only six months afterwards, Herb was committed to a psychiatric institute where he spent two months.

So evidently, the marriage, the whole honeymoon phase, was not very memorable. Well, it was memorable, but he got locked up. Hmm. But in the room, probably no access to sandwiches.

I don't know. There are creases in those mats that they use along the walls. Yeah, that would be frustrating. It would be hard to masturbate if you're in a straitjacket.

Be a bitch. Yes, it would. You know, we ponder those questions on this show that no other show tackles. The hard questions.

The hard questions. I think Insight will tackle whether or not you can masturbate in a straitjacket. You know, somehow I doubt it. I can't see Charlie and I only spend too much time on that issue.

Probably not. We've already spent too much time on that issue. All right. So, but over the next several years, him and Juliana, his wife, produced three children, Brandy.

Oh, so they stayed married for a while. Yeah, yeah. Well, you were acting like they got divorced already. No, no.

He just went in a learning bin after a couple months. So he had three kids. Three children. Marie, which is a young lady.

Okay. Eric, which was a boy. Uh-huh. And Aaron with a, or I'm sorry, Emily, which was a girl.

All very. Aaron is not even close to Emily. Yeah, but it starts with an E. Sure, okay, sure.

So it was Marie, it was the oldest, Eric. Marie, Eric, and Emily. Yes. Okay.

In 1974, Brandy. The year I was born. Herb Barmeister began working at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in Indiana. Sounds like that's where he belongs.

That place is such a sucker of joy. Yeah, that's where you go to work when you want to torture people. Oh. Anyway, he displayed symptoms of his mental illness while he was working there.

He worked at a grocery store at the daily counter. One year, he and his co-worker appeared on a company Christmas card dressed in drag. Sure. Which is probably not a big deal now, but it was in 1974.

Right. Now it's accepted. But back then, that's when even being gay was considered a mental illness. Obviously, simply dressing in drag is not a sign of a mental illness.

However, it was now a character for Herb, and in hindsight, disturbing, considering the nature of the crimes that he would go on to commit, Brandy. So that's a tease. That's what we call a business, a tease. Keep you engaged in our podcast.

What business is that? Podcast. Oh, okay. Herb worked his way up the chain of command to the title of program director.

Did he have a chain of command at the BMV? At the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. He was program director. Huh.

But Brandy, at last, he was terminated from his job in 1985 when he urinated on a letter which was sent to him, which he then sent to the governor of Indiana, Robert Orr. So he got mad and pissed on the letter and sent it to the governor and he got fired. Sure. Seems.

You have to expect some sort of ramifications when you send a letter of urine to the governor. Oh, that seems justified. You don't know what that letter said. It's also in 1985 that the body of Eric Ruger, a 17-year-old white male, was discovered in Indiana.

He may have been one of Herb's first victims. On September 3rd, 1985, that's when I think his killing started, Herb committed a hit and run while intoxicated. Though he was arrested, he did not. They kind of dropped the charges, so he got off.

Less than one year later. So obviously, he's drinking now, right? Right. You think it's the killing started.

Less than one year later, on March 27th, 1986, Herb was charged with auto theft and conspiracy to commit theft, avoiding implications of his actions a second time and beating the charges against him. So he's just getting by with some minor crimes. Obviously, Herb had an interest in men, young men, and so he started living this double life where he would be... Any port in a storm.

Yeah, yeah. I mean, he was your typical married husband, family of five. So he was on the down low. Yeah, and he was cruising for dudes.

Down low. 1988, Randy. Typical married father of three. Typical married father...

I don't think that's typical. No, no, no, no. No, I mean, during the daytime, he was this typical father of three, you know... But at night.

But at night, he would cruise for young men. He turned into a dirty old man. Okay. In 1988, Randy, Herb's mother loaned him $4,000 to open a little thrift store he called Save A Lot.

All right. It's a good title. It is. Which made him $50,000 profit in the first year alone, allowing him to open a second location.

In 1991, Save A Lot was so successful that Herb, Julie, and her three children were able to move into the exclusive area that housed Fox Hollow Farm, an 18-acre, $1 million estate in this prestigious Westville district suburb of Indianapolis. All right. Are you impressed? So impressed.

For the first time in his life, Randy, Herb Baumaster was viewed as a pillar of the community. Wow. Why don't you just move her and shake her now? He's a lunch meat fucker.

The town recognized him as a family man and businessman in the community. He had a popular business that soon began to grow even more, Randy. So he has a whole chain of these Save A Lot. It's still around today, I think.

Yes. And he had a dream home complete with a pool house and a wet bar. You really ride when you've got a wet bar. For sure.

The area was decorated lavishly and sealed with mannequins dressed by Baumaster himself to appear as if they were guests attending an upscale pool party. That is weird. It is a little weird. But I guess he wanted to set the image of, you know, like it's a happening place, right?

It's weird. Yeah. Now, Randy, he began to frequent the local gay bars in search of potential men or potential victims to lure them back to his pool house. So then it's kind of smart.

He said these mannequins people think they're coming into a party. Right. They get there. It is not a party.

I don't know where his wife has been all this time. He would pose as having an autoerotic asphyxiation fetish. Of course, you know, of course the colonel has that. You ever see him joking himself in his office?

I'm afraid I missed that. Not a pretty sight. Perfect. And when you walk in on him, he's going to be fuddled.

That's why you have to knock. Yeah. You always knock when you're in the colonel's right there. Anyway, he would meet these guys in gay bar and he would tell them about his fetish of homoerotic.

Autoerotic. Autoerotic asphyxiation. Okay. You know, he took place.

And that's, of course, for the listeners who don't know. And all of our listeners know what that is. But for our listeners who don't know, it means choking yourself and cutting off air as a means to get a greater orgasm. Right?

Mm-hmm. See, I just don't get that. I never got David Carradine killed. That's how he died.

Mm-hmm. And I've been to the hotel where he's at. I mean, it's in Bangkok. And it's like 10 steps from a brothel.

So why in the world would you hang yourself when you can walk out? Maybe you didn't want to spend the money. Cheap bastard. Nice.

Wow. Now, next time, spend a few bot. Spend some bot and get choked. Yes.

At least have someone else choke, yeah. That's more fun anyway. Yeah. So once he would pick these guys up, and he'd tell them about his fantasy of homoerotic asphyxiation.

Well, I guess in this case it was homoerotic asphyxiation, too, right? Not well, maybe, but we're just going to go with autoerotic. Yeah. Once he got these men back to the farm, he would ensure that they were intoxicated, Randy.

And then he would invite them into the pool. Oh. And you know what would happen when he got in the pool? He'd kill them.

He would strangle them to death. Not something that a pillar of community should be doing. No. I mean, really, that's how you get people to stop coming to your pool.

Well, that's why you have to have mannequins, because real people stop showing up. Their remains were discarded, Randy, in the woods behind Fox Hollow Farm. So he was lazy, too, basically. Just threw them out in the woods.
