A heated debate in McCandless ended with a vote limiting local police involvement in federal immigration enforcement. After more than two hours of public comment, McCandless council narrowly voted to bar its police department from assisting ICE and Customs and Border Protection in civil immigration enforcement. Residents were divided — one calling the move the wrong message, while another argued it protects community trust. The resolution also prevents the township from entering a 287(g) agreement, which would allow local officers to carry out certain federal immigration duties.
