A Historic Call to United Prayer for Revival | Jonathan Edwards

from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu

Deep Dive into Extraordinary Prayer for the Revival of Religion and the Advancement of Christ's Kingdom on Earth by Jonathan Edwards - An Historical Account of the Concert to Which the Memorial RelatesIn October 1744, a group of Scottish ministers recognized the need for a unified, extraordinary movement of prayer to seek God's grace for a global spiritual revival and the advancement of Christ's kingdom. They developed a structured but flexible method to encourage consistent prayer among believers for the following two years.Participants were asked to dedicate time for prayer every Saturday evening and Sunday morning, as well as on the first Tuesday of every quarter. Saturday and Sunday were chosen because believers were generally free from secular affairs and already focused on spiritual duties. Tuesday was selected for the quarterly observance because it was more convenient for public gatherings and sermons than Monday. The ministers emphasized that this agreement was not a rigid vow; if urgent matters interfered, participants were simply encouraged to observe the duty on the next available day. By establishing specific times, the organizers hoped to prevent the natural tendency to neglect prayer due to worldly distractions or laziness, while also providing believers with the encouraging knowledge that Christians in distant places were praying simultaneously.Initially, the organizers promoted this prayer movement through private correspondence rather than public announcements to avoid early criticism. The initiative proved highly successful, gaining the support of numerous praying societies in major Scottish cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as participants in England and North America. As the initial two-year trial period drew to a close, the Scottish ministers decided to print and distribute a formal Memorial to encourage the continuation of this united prayer effort. Approximately five hundred copies of this document were sent across various colonies in North America to further expand and sustain the movement.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@ReformedExplainerWorship Music: https://suno.com/playlist/3a498d0f-c90e-4981-8aa7-59834e7239f7https://buymeacoffee.com/edi2730
