A Labor Nurse’s Advice on Preparing Clients for Birth

from Birth Healing Summit Podcast · host Lynn Schulte, PT

Have your clients asked what they need to do to prepare for giving birth in the hospital? Do they know they can advocate for themselves? How do you suggest they prepare for birth? In today’s episode, Lynn talks with Kelly Hof, a Labor and Delivery Nurse and Birth Coach on how to best prepare and support our clients who are having a hospital birth. She recommends asking your clients to think about these topics and questions to create an environment that is supportive and that will be more optimal for a smooth birth:Talk to your clients about the type of experience they desire. Do they want a nurse who is more present to allow for questions to be answered or more hands off? Being interrupted every 20 to 30 minutes can be disruptive to the birth flow if it is not what your client wants or expects. There is a way to speak up and request a change from the nurse assigned to your birth if it does not feel like the correct support. This may help decrease trauma during the birth and allow for birth progression.Let your clients know that sacral flexion is a clue to the end stage of labor and help them understand what this means and how to ask what their body is doing if they cannot feel it directly.Give your clients the resources they need to support past traumas so they can enter the birth space as peacefully and emotionally prepared as possible. If you would like to learn more about identifying and treating the Sacral Flexion Pattern that Kelly and Lynn talked about in today’s episode please check out the Institute for Birth Healing’s free course.Have a comment or question about today’s episode?
