A Matinee presented in Atomo-Vision
from The Pod Charles Cinecast · host The Prince Charles Cinema
This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas head to Key West, Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis, where a show-boating B-movie Producer comes to town to cash in the fears of imminent nuclear disaster amongst the townsfolk with his latest sci-fi horror film, MANT. We've got one last date (for now) with the Filaversary, our 1993 arc, where we are having a look at Joe Dante's coming-of-age film, MATINEE, starring John Goodman. It's part silly comedy, part loving homage to the 50s and 60s era of B-Movie films and cinema, particularly those of William Castle. The film is full of fun and gimmicks that any cinema fan would enjoy and wish they could be part of, but also playing on the very real world fears of the atomic bomb during the Cold War, and the power of cinema bringing people together to face their biggest fears. Matinee is a total underrated gem, and is one to see if you are a fan of Joe Dante's other works (Gremlins, Innerspace, Explorers or The 'Burbs). Join us, as we talk a bit of Dante's career, the origins of the movie, gimmicks in cinema, and radioactive bugs..."You think grown-ups have it all figured out? That's just a hustle, kid. Grown-ups are making it up as they go along, just like you. You remember that, and you'll do fine."If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review!
