A Moment To Pause: Lent - Wednesday 4th March 2026 #lent #prayer #mercy

from A Moment to Pause - a short daily Christmas reflection · host The Oblates

Good Morning. Thank you for joining all of the Oblate Family today for our time of reflection and prayer during Lent with Padraig Corcoran, Director of Oblate Youth Ministry.  In this passage, Matthew 20:17–28, Jesus pulls his disciples to the side, He foretells His suffering, death, and resurrection. As He walks toward Jerusalem, He speaks plainly about the cross. Yet, in striking contrast, the mother of James and John asks that her sons be given places of honour in His kingdom. While Jesus speaks of sacrifice, they are thinking of status. This moment reveals how easy it is to misunderstand discipleship. The cup Jesus speaks of is not one of glory but of suffering. To follow Him means sharing in His self-giving love, not seeking personal advancement. Jesus then gathers the disciples and redefines greatness: “Whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant.” In a world where power often means control and dominance, Jesus presents leadership as service. True authority is expressed in humility and self-giving love. He points to Himself as the model: “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Greatness in God’s kingdom is measured not by position, but by love that sacrifices for others. This passage challenges us to ask: Are we following Christ for recognition, or are we willing to serve quietly and faithfully?  Thank you for joining us this morning.
