However, the church fathers' most quoted passage of Scripture (in the writings from the church fathers that have survived) comes from Matthew 5:44. "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." It is easy to guess why. In the first 300 years of Christianity, the Christian faith was a fringe and mis-understood movement in the midst of the vast Roman empire. Christians often faced persecution and sometimes even martyrdom. Rather than striving for cultural prominence or political power, early Christians sought the welfare and common good of their neighbors by practicing enemy love.
