A pound of flesh!

from Daily Picture · host Stephanie Hawkins

If someone is described as wanting their pound of flesh, it means they are ruthlessly legalistic in all they do however heartless and cruel. This expression is coined through The Merchant of Venice, written by the brilliant English play writer William Shakespeare. The threat of a pound of flesh being cut off an unfortunate debtor by his creditor, through a contract they had previously agreed upon, was prevented through the wisdom of one unexpected person, even when the court was struggling to come to a conclusion. Similarly, in the Old Testament, King Solomon was blessed with immense wisdom, having asked God for it above all else. With this wisdom he. sorted out complicated conflicts and gained the respect of all around him. (1 King 3:11 ff). We can but ask for wisdom which God will faithfully give to us, without question (James 1:5)
