A Raw Youth Part 1 Chapter 8

In which a young man sets out on a cold Petersburg morning with a resolute but uncertain plan involving a matter of honour, only to be met with practical scepticism and jibes from an old acquaintance, followed by a bewildering encounter with a cunning and intrusive gentleman amidst the complex and cramped lodgings of the city. He then inadvertently overhears a tense and private conversation between two women, leading to a fraught confrontation that reveals tangled intrigues and secrets, leaving our observer both vexed and emotionally shaken.
