At sixteen hundred meters off Hawaii, a remotely operated robot discovered a giant glass sponge three and a half meters long, with an estimated lifespan of several thousand years — the largest sponge animal known on Earth. In the story, the robot sent to help protect the sponge asks whether touching it to study it contradicts the reason they came — and finds a way to gather the data without leaving a mark.
