A scarecrow
from Daily Picture · host Stephanie Hawkins
Today I envisaged a straw-stuffed scarecrow. Scarecrows can generate a comfortable feeling such as of the amiable character in The Wizard of Oz film or in the English nursery rhyme, "I'm a Dingle Dangle Scarecrow with a flippy floppy hat ...". However, in contrast, there is a horror film with a scary grotesque scarecrow, which can generate fear. Just as none of these scarecrows are actually real, our fears can be based on fictitious scarecrows. 1 John 4:18: "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear because fear involves torment". Disciple John is telling us that when we know and trust God's unconditional love for us, we will not fear. Love and Fear do not go hand in hand. As recorded in 2 Timothy 1:7, with advice for us all to receive, Apostle Paul encourages young Pastor Timothy, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind".
