A Sense of Identity

How we perceive ourselves matters, and we care about how others perceive us too. We move through the different stages in our life from a baby, to pre-schooler, to student, teenager and adult. We might identify as a musician, a sportsperson, as creative or an academic. We may be viewed as a trouble-maker, or spirited, lively, reserved or shy, an extrovert or an introvert, and perhaps an ambivert someone who teeters between both personality types. The different phases or stages in our life bring a different type of identity, and this may be a point that is wrestled with in private as a challenge or a crisis, or publicly owned and celebrated. Developmental psychologist Erik Erikson, believes that an identity crisis is a development event that involves a person questioning their sense of self or place in the world, and that the formation of identity was one of the most important conflicts that people face. Identity can be tied to colour, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, culture, religion, professional identity, ability identity, nationality, and socioeconomic status. Our identity is evident in our birth certificate, driver's license, passport, and more recently the paperwork required to prove immunisation for Covid. Tune in to listen to the full podcast.
