A soup that feeds the U.S. Senate

As we continue the celebration of our nation’s 250th birthday, here’s a recipe that ties in with our country’s history. Senate Bean Soup has been served in the restaurant of the U.S. Senate for more than 100 years. It’s a simple soup of navy beans, ham hocks, and onion that’s on the menu every day. According to a Wikipedia entry about the soup, during World War II rationing left the Senate kitchen without enough navy beans to serve the soup on Sept. 14, 1943; this was reported in the Washington Times-Herald the next day.
