A Spotlight on the Scriptures: Ecclesiastes: Under the Sun

from Biblical Talks with Elder Michael Tolliver Podcast · host Michael Tolliver

Send us Fan MailThis is a Spotlight on the Scriptures: Ecclesiastes 1:2-3 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.  What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun? “Everything is vanity,” the preacher cries. “Everything is empty. Everything is meaningless”—but only when seen through human eyes. That’s the cry from under the sun. And don’t miss that phrase—it’s the key to the whole lament. Because under the sun is where we hustle and grind. Under the sun is where we work, where we play, where we raise our babies and bury our dead. It’s the realm of sweat and sorrow, of laughter that fades and dreams that die.Under the sun, life looks like a vapor—here today, gone tomorrow. Under the sun, wisdom can’t stop death, and riches can’t buy peace. Under the sun, we chase wind and call it success. We build kingdoms that crumble. We gather treasures that rust. We live like we’ll never die and die like we never lived. But hear me, church: there’s another perspective. There’s a view above the sun. And when you lift your eyes, when you fix your gaze on the eternal, everything changes. What looked like vanity becomes victory. What felt meaningless becomes mission. What seemed empty gets filled with glory. So don’t get stuck under the sun. Don’t let your theology be trapped in the dust. Lift your eyes. Look higher. Live for the One who reigns above the sun—because only He can give meaning to the madness, purpose to the pain, and eternity to the temporary. This is a Spotlight on the Scriptures  Support the showHave a blessed day, and thanks for listening!
