They then head to constable John Rance's home and on the way, Holmes explains to Watson how he figured out so many details of the case. When they arrive Rance tells them all that happened while he was on duty during the murder. He is shocked at all Holmes can say about the evening, and even accuses Holmes of having been there while the attack occurred. Rance explains further that the only people in the street were himself, another constable, and a man who was so drunk that he couldn't have been the culprit. Holmes asks him a few questions about the drunkard, and after giving him a coin, explains to Rance that the drunkard was the culprit, and he let him go. When alone, Holmes goes to explain to Watson that the man came back for the ring, and that they should now be able to use it as bait.
