A Tam O'Shanter
from Daily Picture · host Stephanie Hawkins
I saw an image of a tam o'shanter today, an old fashioned Scottish flat cap with a bobble in the centre, immortalised by legendary Scottish poet Robert Burns. He wrote a narrative poem about continually drunk Tam O'Shanter who was chased by witches and the devil on one of his drunken escapades. He only just managed to escape them. I sense that this is a reminder that we enter into risk and danger when we follow our self satisfying ways and forget to listen to the ways of the Spirit. The letters to the Ephesians and Galatians, chapters 5 in both, speak along these lines. For instance Galatians 5:13 says, "You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love". (Galatians 5:13)
