A tangle of briars and thorns

from Daily Picture · host Stephanie Hawkins

I saw a tangled forest undergrowth with briars, thorns and thistles. This is a good reminder of one the humiliations Jesus endured on the cross, of the crown of thorns the Roman soldiers pressed into his skull. For the soldiers, they were adding insult to injury as they were mocking Jesus as a ridiculous king (John 19:1-3). Every verse has significance in the bible. The soldiers weren't aware that they were acknowledging that Jesus was redeeming mankind from the curse of the Law. In Genesis we learn that God placed a curse on Adam and Eve for disobeying His command not to eat of The Tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil - "cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you ..." (Genesis 3:17b-18). Not one of us can profess that we never disobey God so we all actually deserve a consequence. Apostle Paul teaches us that: "But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, 'Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree' " (Galatians 3:13). Would you not think that it is no coincidence that Jesus hung and died on wood. Also, interestingly, the site of Jesus's crucifixion was "Golgotha" - the place of the skull.
