A Touch of Zen, dir. King Hu

from I Am The Wiz Film Club · host The Wiz

Zero and Wiz RECOMMEND A Touch of Zen Technically, A Touch of Zen is a surprisingly ageless, gorgeous film. Both Zero and Wiz were impressed by the visuals of the film, from the cinematography featuring the natural landscapes and the towns all the way to the editing of the fight scenes. The film feels surprisingly modern: maybe it was the remastering of the film we watched on Criterion Channel, but the film feels more like something that could have been made in the 80s/90s that an early 70s. They also both enjoyed the story, but for different reasons: Zero liked the political machinations that were on display as well as the references to Buddhism that pepper the film. Wiz just thought it was a fun, enjoyable epic action film that reminded him more of The Hidden Fortress in some ways. What they both feel is that the film isn't that deep, but it's still a highly enjoyable film with great fight choreography and visuals.
