A Very Episcopate Conversation- Creation Care with Bishop Cathleen

In this episode… we talk about Creation Care. This is a well talked about topic in the Episcopal Church as we are called to be good stewards of God’s creation. For this conversation we are joined by Rt. Rev. Cathleen Bascom, 10th Bishop of Kansas and Riley Demo, a young adult who is a graduate student at Johns Hopkins Blomberg School of Public Health. We talk about the joys, grief, opportunities and hope we have for the church in its pursuit of Creation Care.  About the HostsClare Stern-Burbano (she/her) is a member of the laity and currently a college, youth, and children’s minister at a parish in Kansas City, MO and third-year seminarian at Univ. of Dubuque Theological Seminary and a candidate for Anglican Studies at Bishop Kemper School for Ministry. She hopes of one day becoming an Episcopal priest. Clare comes from an interfaith family and found a spiritual home in the Episcopal Church when she was nine years old.  The Rev. David Kendrick (he/him) serves as the Rector at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Springfield, MO in the Diocese of West Missouri. He is married to Laura and they are really proud of their son, John, their daughter-in-law, Nancy, and two young grandsons.  The Rev. Collin Larimore (he/him) serves as Associate Rector at Grace Episcopal Church in Carthage, Missouri in the Diocese of West Missouri. Fr. Collin has a passion for the outdoors, travel, and food. A native of the Ozarks of southern Missouri, Fr. Collin was raised in the Episcopal Church, studied religion and conservation in undergraduate, and completed his seminary studies at Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas. About our Guests: The Right Reverend Cathleen Chittenden Bascom, D.Min., was ordained and consecrated as the 10th bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas on Saturday, March 2, 2019, in Grace Cathedral, Topeka. The chief consecrator was Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry. Bishop Alan Scarfe of Iowa was the preacher.She is the first woman to serve as bishop of the diocese. She had a faith experience that was nurtured at the Canterbury House and Trinity Episcopal Church in Lawrence, where she explored a call to ordination. After seminary she served as curate for three years at St. Gregory’s in Deerfield, Ill. She then returned to Kansas to help replant campus ministry at K-State, Washburn and Wichita State from 1993-2001, where she initiated the purchase of the St. Francis Canterbury House in Manhattan. In 2018 she was named to a three-year term on the Episcopal Church’s Task Force on Care of Creation and Environmental Racism. She is married to Tim Bascom, and they have two adult sons, Conrad and Luke. Bishop Cathleen likes to garden, cross country ski, travel, and enjoy the blessings of family and friends. (Bio provided courtesy of the Diocese of Kansas).  Riley Demo is a first-year graduate student at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public pursuing studies in ScM Environmental Health and Engineering she is also seeking certifications in Risk Science & Public Policy, Food Systems, the Environment & Public Health, and Climate Change & Public Health. She is involved in climate writing and storytelling through the university as well! Riley is originally from the Kansas City area where her parents both serve as Episcopal priests at St. Thomas in Overland Park. While in Baltimore, Riley services at Old St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and has started to become more involved in their community while also focusing on Urban Agriculture outreach through a local interfaith network.
