A Very Problematic Thanksgiving with Ed Schupman

This week Ed Schupman (manager of the Native Knowledge 360° Initiative and a citizen of the Muscogee Creek Nation of Oklahoma) joins Ana Marie Cox (@anamariecox) to discuss Thanksgiving and the surrounding myths. Reflecting on the tragedy that underlies Thanksgiving isn’t easy or fun but Ed has made a career of using Thanksgiving as a way into a broader discussion of Native American History. To truly process the gritty, uncomfortable story of Thanksgiving will require reinventing the American educational system. Listen to Ed unpack a perspective on both the American experience and the practice of gratitude, as he argues that we should be thinking about indigeous history year-round, and practicing gratitude year-round as well.” Resources from the National Museum of the American Indian, and Ed’s curated experience, is available at https://americanindian.si.edu/nk360/ Thanks to our sponsors! The Open Bible Podcast is for Christians seeking answers to understand the scriptures in their context and mystries. There are passages that can be obscure to modern readers due to historical or cultural references. Peter said that Scripture contains “some things that are hard to understand”, 2 Peter 3:16. The lack of understanding & knowledge can be deadly. Psalm 19:7: declares that the “testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple”. But the simple cannot be made wise by something they are unable to understand. Surely, the Word of God does demand the need for interpretation, explanation, and exposition of the scripture by diligent Bible Teachers. To comprehend God and His dealings with mankind in the past, and His plans for the future, is the main goal of these podcasts. Homesteader, The by Oscar Micheaux (1884 - 1951) LibriVox The Homesteader is a semi-autobiographic novel about Jean Baptiste, an African-American homesteader in the Dakotas. He meets Agnes who he falls in love with, however as Agnes is presumed to be white, he is not allowed to marry her, so instead he marries the daughter of a black preacher, Orlean, which eventually, due to family issues, ends in a tragedy. Returning to his homestead, he finds Agnes again and discovers her upbringing and past, which brings the book to its conclusion.
