A Vision of the Latter Day Glories

from Daily Sermon Station · host Daily Sermon Station

Spurgeon uses Isaiah's vision of the mountain of the Lord's house rising above all other mountains and all nations flowing to it as a breathtaking picture of the church's ultimate destiny — beginning as a despised and tiny hill, growing through the individual efforts of believers and the inner life of Christ within her, and destined to become supreme over every competing religion, philosophy, and empire until the whole earth is filled with the knowledge and worship of God. He identifies three forces that will bring about this triumph: the faithful daily labor of every Christian adding their stone to the growing hill, the living fire of truth and grace already burning within the church that must expand her, and above all the second advent of Christ himself, which Spurgeon expects will make short work of every remaining enemy, bring the Jewish people to sudden faith, and usher in the universal reign described in the text. He closes with two contrasting appeals: one to believers, who should be stirred to zeal by this glorious destiny and work toward it with full effort; and one to the unconverted, who are warned that the coming day of Christ's victory will be their destruction if they are still his enemies, and urgently invited to come now to the cross where any weary, sin-burdened soul may climb the accessible mountain of grace and find rest.Sermon delivered by Charles Spurgeon on April 24th, 1859.
