A Week in the Life of Jesus — Jesus Clears the Temple

Four verses — Luke 19:45–48 — carry a hard-hitting message. Jesus enters Jerusalem and goes not to Pilate's house but to the temple, signaling that he is far more concerned with Israel's relationship to God than with Roman oppression. What he finds in the outer courts is organized corruption: priests rejecting worshipers' animals to force costly exchanges, money changers gouging pilgrims at the temple tax. His response is anger, and the teaching distinguishes righteous anger from sin (Ephesians 4:26), arguing that the real problem today is not that God gets angry at sin but that we so often do not. Grace is never license; it should make us run from sin, not toward it. Jesus' authority is “it is written,” the same authority the church stands on, and the message presses believers to know and stand on Scripture's hard teachings rather than be silenced by culture. After the cleansing, Jesus taught for three days while the leaders looked for a way to kill him.
