A Week in the Life of Jesus — Mount of Olives

Luke 22:39–46 finds Jesus in the garden the night before the cross. The message centers on a single observation: prayer was Jesus' custom, not a crisis reflex. He went to the Mount of Olives “as usual,” and his strategy against the temptation of faithlessness — the same fickleness that turned a praising crowd into a murderous one — is the same access to the Father available to every believer. The prayer itself is examined as perhaps Jesus' most relatable: “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” Here is a prayer God did not answer the way it was prayed, modeling trust in the Father's sovereignty even when the answer is no. Jesus' anguish, his sweat like drops of blood, and the angel's ministry underscore the cost of obedience. The disciples sleep instead of pray; the closing charge is to make prayer a daily discipline, not an emergency measure.
