A zoom into Uganda

from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa

Time to go to our last segment and today we are zooming into Uganda. The country has moved to clamp down on social media use in the country even as its diplomatic relations with the United States have taken a bad turn after a tense and disputed election. On Monday, internet services were restored after a shutdown imposed just ahead of polls opening on January 14 but the ban on social media, which was originally imposed on January 13, has remained in place. Only Ugandans with virtual private networks (VPNs) that haven’t already been blocked are currently able to access social media. Let’s go to Uganda now and speak to Oryem Nyeko from Human Rights Watch and he is the Tanzanian and Ugandan researcher.
