Abington police ending contract with Flock surveillance company over privacy, data security concerns

Abington police in Montgomery County will not renew their contract with Flock -- the license plate-reader camera company -- over concerns about privacy and data security. However, the department says it's not doing away with surveillance cams; it's looking for a new supplier. The chief told the Inquirer the cameras "bring a lot of value to what we do" -- even as he says, "We're sensitive to the issues surrounding Flock." The company has heard criticism from the ACLU, which calls the cameras a "surveillance nightmare" for the detailed information they log about every vehicle in a national database. Abington police say the system has helped them make arrests.
