Absaroka: The Almost 49th State

It contained parts of Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota and it called Sheridan, Wyoming its Capital. Absaroka today lends it’s name to the fictional county that Longmire is the Sheriff of and a few mountain ranges that pre-date the state, but for two years in the 1940s, it tried to declare itself as its own state in rebellion against the New Deal and feeling as thought it would negatively affect the farmers and ranchers in the area.
