Abusers Pretending To Be Victims

from THINK BEFORE YOU SLEEP · host THINK BEFORE YOU SLEEP

A woman cries in a courtroom. A man describes his childhood trauma. A parent tells a social worker they are being abused by their own child. Everyone believes them. That is what makes them so dangerous. In this episode, I uncover the phenomenon of DARVO, a manipulation tactic used by abusers to flip the script and portray themselves as the injured party. The acronym stands for Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender. The pattern is predictable: when confronted with evidence of abuse, the abuser first denies any wrongdoing. Then they attack the victim's character, credibility, or sanity. Finally, they present themselves as the true victim of the situation. The tactic works because human beings are wired to believe the first story they hear. By the time the actual victim speaks, the abuser has already poisoned the well. The research shows that DARVO is most common among narcissists, sociopaths, and individuals with borderline personality disorder. It appears in domestic violence cases, workplace disputes, family court proceedings, and even international politics. The victim is left confused, gaslit, and often accused of being the abuser themselves. The most effective defense is documentation. Written records, text messages, emails, and witness accounts create an objective timeline that no amount of emotional manipulation can erase. But for every victim who escapes, there are many who never find the proof they need to be believed. Turn down the lights, put on your headphones, and press play because the person crying the loudest is not always the one who is hurting.
