"Acceptable Submission" | Ephesians 5:22-23

Biblical submission in marriage is frequently misinterpreted in our culture as control or oppression, but Ephesians 5 paints a completely different picture. True submission is about complementary roles within God's created order, where both husband and wife are equal in essence and value but different in function. The Greek term originally referred to a voluntary attitude of yielding and cooperation, similar to a military chain of command but operating as a team effort. For wives, submission means willingly following their husband's leadership 'as to the Lord'—not because the husband demands it, but as an act of obedience to God. For husbands, though the word 'submit' isn't explicitly used, they are called to an even more sacrificial form of submission: loving their wives as Christ loved the Church, giving themselves up for her. This means nourishing, cherishing, and treating their wives as equals. Together, husband and wife form a 'three-fold cord' with God at the center, creating a synergistic relationship that accomplishes more for the Kingdom than either could alone. When both partners understand submission as service rather than control, marriage becomes a powerful testimony of Christ's relationship with His Church—a mystery that points to something far greater than ourselves.
