We excuse ourselves by saying things like, “What did you expect me to do? Life happened.” But as human beings, we are limited. We don’t have full control over everything.Even with the best intentions, we break promises. These can range from everyday commitments to spiritual vows. Let’s look at a few examples.Common Promises People Make (But Often Break)Everyday Commitments:“I’ll start exercising on Monday.”“I’ll eat healthier.”“I’ll call you soon.”“I’ll never do that again.”“I’ll always be there for you.”“I’ll save more money.”“I’ll stop procrastinating.”Spiritual Commitments:“I’ll start praying every day.” 🙏“I’ll read my Bible more.” 📖“I’ll go to church every Sunday.”⛪️ “I’ll forgive them.” 💔“I’m done with that sin.” ⚠️“I’ll serve more in church.” 🙋“I’ll trust God fully this time.” 😟“I’ll be a better parent/spouse/friend.” 💞“I’ll stop gossiping/judging.” 🗣“I’ll live for God—tomorrow.” ⏳God Takes Promises SeriouslyEcclesiastes 5:4–5 (NKJV)Matthew 5:33–37 (NKJV)James 4:13–17 (NLT)Broken promises erode trust. But when we allow God to guide us, we gain strength to fulfill our word.God is Faithful to His Promises2 Corinthians 1:20 (NKJV)Numbers 23:19 (NKJV)People may fail, but God never does. His promises are reliable, powerful, and eternal. The story of Joshua is proof.Joshua 1:1–9 – What God’s Promises Look LikeGod gives Joshua five major promises after Moses’ death:“Every place the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you…” → This is about territory and expansion—God gives clear boundaries and vision.“No man shall be able to stand before you…” → God promises victory over every enemy.“As I was with Moses, so I will be with you.” → God ensures continuity of presence and power.“I will not leave you nor forsake you.” → A promise of divine companionship and loyalty.“The Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” → God’s omnipresence and unwavering guidance.God’s Promises Come with Our Participation“Be strong and of good courage…” (vv. 6, 7, 9)God calls Joshua to action.
