Access to the Promised Future – Part 8: No Sunset Until You Win

from Rock Of Refuge Ministries · host Pastor Njabulo

Introduction – Who’s Next? Not Me!Israel was on a winning streak. Jericho? Gone. Ai? Gone. Word spread like wildfire. Nations were shaking. The kings said, “Who’s next?”The Gibeonites said, “Not me!” But they didn’t say it with swords. They said it with surrender.Sometimes the smartest move you’ll ever make is not to fight harder but to bow lower.1. The Wisdom of SurrenderThe Gibeonites could fight. Joshua 10:2 says they were strong warriors. But they knew—you can’t fight God and win.So what did they do?Put on ragged clothes.Carried moldy bread.Looked weak. Looked desperate. Looked foolish. It’s better to look foolish in surrender than to die in pride.Genesis 12:3 They tapped into a promise God made to Abraham centuries earlier. They didn’t even know the fine print of covenant law—but they knew enough to humble themselves.Think about it. We live in a culture where everyone wants to look like they’ve got it all together:The Instagram filter says “perfect.”The smile says “I’m fine.”The bank account is in overdraft, but the outfit says “I’m winning.”But the Gibeonites show us something countercultural: sometimes salvation comes when you admit you don’t have it all together.2. Humility Attracts God’s GraceJoshua said, “Why did you lie to us?”The Gibeonites said, “Because we were afraid. We’re at your mercy.”That’s not manipulation—that’s humility.James 4:6 Sometimes your salvation will come through the strangest door. But if it leads you to grace, walk through it. Grace doesn’t meet you where you’re impressive. Grace meets you where you’re honest.Rahab tied a scarlet cord.David acted like a madman to escape Saul. The Gibeonites wore moldy clothes. Not impressive. Not glamorous. But effective.3. The Revelation They SawThe Gibeonites realized something other nations missed:We know how to fight, but we can’t fight against God.Our strength is nothing compared to His sovereignty.Wisdom is not knowing how to fight. Wisdom is knowing which fights to walk away from and fight isn’t worth fighting.4. The God Who Fights for the HumbleHave you ever been in a fight that you didn’t even start?Joshua wasn’t looking for trouble. He had just honored a covenant with Gibeon. And suddenly—five kings, five armies, five battles in one—came against him. That’s how life works. Sometimes, the moment you decide to do what’s right, opposition rises up. But what we learn in this story is simple: When the odds are stacked against you, God is stacked for you.A. Opposition is Proof You’re on the Right TrackIf the pressure is great, maybe the purpose is greater.John 16:33 When the five kings attacked Gibeon, they weren’t really attacking Gibeon. They were attacking covenant.B. God Speaks Victory Before the BattleWhen God has spoken, the battle is already decided.Romans 8:31 C. When Your Effort Meets God’s InterventionSometimes your hustle is not enough—but your God is more than enough.Exodus 14:14 D. Bold Prayers Release Unusual MiraclesWhat if the only thing standing between you and your miracle is the size of your prayer?Ephesians 3:20 And covenant called Joshua to march all night to defend them. But the real defender wasn’t Joshua.God confused the armies.God dropped hailstones from heaven.God made the sun stand still.5. Practical Pull-ThroughHow many times have we lost because we fought the wrong fight?Fighting for pride instead of fighting for peace.Fighting people instead of fighting in prayer.Fighting God’s plan instead of surrendering to it.Isaiah 41:11–12Psalm 27:3 Don’t waste your energy fighting battles God never called you to fight. Align with Him, and He will extend the day until you win. Conclusion – We Are the Gibeonites of This GenerationWe were next in line for judgment. We deserved wrath. But like Gibeon, we humbled ourselves.Romans 5:8 1 Peter 3:18 We surrendered. Christ fought. And He won.Romans 8:37
