The United Nations was founded after the Second World War for the purpose of preventing future world wars. It’s founding was celebrated as a modern form of the Peace of Westphalia. When Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990 the United Nations rallied to support President George H.W. Bush in the Gulf War to push Saddam’s forces back into Iraq. After the September 11th attacks in 2001 the United Nations rallied behind Bush’s son in Afghanistan to remove the Taliban and establish a new government. However, when George Bush Jr. attempted to parlay that support into support for an invasion of Iraq to change the regime the United Nations did not comply.
