Achyutashtakam Introduction and Recitation

from Mantra Talks · host Koushik k

Achyutāshtakam is a simple yet wonderful hymn of eight stanzas  comprising the names of lord Vishnu with main emphasis on his  incarnations Rāma and Krishna. This easy to sing hymn of  wonderful metre was composed by āchārya Shankara Bhagavadpāda. The names  indicate various divine qualities of lord Vishnu and glorify his great  deeds. āchārya shankara bhagavadpāda compiles a collection of  names of lord Vishnu containing deep meaning in them and remind us of  the great pastimes of the lord narrated in the purānas. They also remind  us the beauty of his forms and help us visualize and contemplate on  him. This book is an effort to put light of meaning of each name  from this hymn and also narrate in short the incidents the names  indicate or relate to. The names in this hymn are compiled from Vedas, purānas, Upanishads, Vishnu sahasranāma and mantra shāstras. Some  of the names are repeated more than one time. When it comes to praising  the lord’s name repetition is not seen as an error. Some names are repeated for its greatness and glory and the names value as a mantra. At  places, I have indicated the value of the names given in this hymn by  naming the sources in which the names are used as mantras. This is done  to emphasize the kindness of āchārya shankara bhagavadpāda who compiled  this wonderful hymn of names and to emphasize the importance of the  names used in this hymn.
