Si bien la primera y segunda guerra mundial dieron paso al nacimiento del fotoperiodismo durante el siglo XX, hay tres eventos que se consideran hoy en día, los responsables de un nuevo giro o forma de dar a conocer los hechos a través de imágenes fotográficas en el siglo XXI: Los atentados del 11 de septiembre de 2001, la invasión de Iraq entre el 18 de marzo y el 1 de mayo de 2003 y el Tsunamí del Océano Índico del 26 de diciembre de 2004.
